I like Carey; I am far more fond of the kind of realistic low-key romance-oid with complications relationship like that between Felix Castor and Pen Bruckner, or even the relationshiop between Joe Pitt and Evie in Charlie Huston's books, than anything that foregrounds romance; I'm back and forth on how it's handled in the Dresden books, having settled on more or less the position that Butcher's heart is in the right place but he's not quite up to what he's trying to do with the positions espoused by the narrator being shown up as Not Good by the actual events.
I may well try one, am just tight enough for book money right now that I'm not trying totally new authors without checking for the opinions of people of whose tastes I already have something of a map.
