70. R.E. Witt, Isis in the Ancient World, Cornell, 1971.
The man badly needs an education in anthropology and sociology. To tell the truth, I couldn't finish it: his treatment of development over time is... lacking, his arrangement by theme is, to be frank, less clear and straightforward than one might wish, and most annoyingly of all, he persists in seeing the Hellenistic trend towards universalising syncretism as a precursor of Christianity, the "less primitive" religion, and will not refrain from editorialising in this vein.
On the whole, pretty freaking disappointing. Also very lacking in analysis - not description, analysis - both of the archaeological material and in general. Bah.
