I'm not hugely familiar with the early Church. But by the time the idea of "grace" filtered down to me, it had become an unearned gift. I think faith comes into it as a way to try to be worthy of the gift, which is impossible, but it's important to show willing. Or something. I haven't been to church in a year and a half....
