I have acquired a travel bursary and arranged to spend five weeks in Greece between August and September. The fine details of accommodation are yet to be worked out, but with any luck I will be a long while in Athens, a short while in Corinth and in Epidauros, a while on Kos, and back in Athens for a while before departing.

I suppose this means I need to stop pretending and actually write Thesis: Chapter 1, lest I prove a vast disappointment to the people I managed to impress with my research proposal. Like my supervisor.

Today, however, I need to finish my unending Greek homework, log the books I read over the holidays, and actually eat something.

You're justified. There were something like 600 tenure-track history jobs this year; I don't think French and classics are in better shape.

According to some people, every advertised position in academia in this islands can expect upwards of forty applicants. Or more.

That's probably about the same proportion as here. More jobs, but also more people. :-( I'm going to knit a mitten instead of thinking about it.
