Plato, Apology, 17d end -18b beginning
[17d]...ὥσπερ οὖν ἄν, εἰ τῷ ὄντι ξένος ἐτύγχανον ὤν, συνεγιγνώσκετε δήπου ἄν μοι εἰ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ φωνῇ τε καὶ τῷ τρόπῳ
Therefore, since I happen to be a foreigner present in this place, you should make allowances for me, I suppose, if in this kind of language and in this way of life
[18α] ἔλεγον ἐν οἷσπερ ἐτεθράμμην, καὶ δὴ καὶ νῦν τοῦτο ὑμῶν δέομαι δίκαιον, ὥς γέ μοι δοκῶ, τὸν μὲν τρόπον τῆς λέξεως ἐᾶν—ἴσως μὲν γὰρ χείρων, ἴσως δὲ βελτίων ἂν εἴη—αὐτὸ δὲ τοῦτο σκοπεῖν καὶ τούτῳ τὸν νοῦν προσέχειν, εἰ δίκαια λέγω ἢ μή: δικαστοῦ μὲν γὰρ αὕτη ἀρετή, ῥήτορος δὲ τἀληθῆ λέγειν.
πρῶτον μὲν οὖν δίκαιός εἰμι ἀπολογήσασθαι, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, πρὸς τὰ πρῶτά μου ψευδῆ κατηγορημένα καὶ τοὺς πρώτους κατηγόρους, ἔπειτα δὲ πρὸς τὰ ὕστερον καὶ τοὺς
I were to speak in such ways as I'd been reared, and moreover now that I ask this judgement of you, as indeed it seems to me, if to suffer with this manner of speech - if the inferior and the superior [manners of speech] are equal - to examine this thing itself and to this pay attention, whether I speak justice or not: for this is the arete of a judge, and of an orator [the arete is] to speak the truth.
So first I'm to defend myself justly, O Athenian men, with respect to the first lies alleged against me and the first betrayers, and next with regard to the second and the
