Xenophon Economics 7.16-7.20

[16] καὶ τί δή, ἔφη, ὁρᾷς, ἡ γυνή, ὅ τι ἂν ἐγὼ ποιοῦσα συναύξοιμι τὸν οἶκον; ναὶ μὰ Δί᾽, ἔφην ἐγώ, ἅ τε οἱ θεοὶ ἔφυσάν σε δύνασθαι καὶ ὁ νόμος συνεπαινεῖ, ταῦτα πειρῶ ὡς βέλτιστα ποιεῖν.
"And what then," the wife said, "do you see that I by doing might assist in enriching the household?" "Yes by Zeus," said I, "what the gods made you able to do and the law approves, try to do these as well as possible."
[17] καὶ τί δὴ ταῦτ᾽ ἐστιν; ἔφη ἐκείνη. οἶμαι μὲν ἔγωγε, ἔφην, οὐ τὰ ἐλαχίστου ἄξια, εἰ μή πέρ γε καὶ ἡ ἐν τῷ σμήνει ἡγεμὼν μέλιττα ἐπ᾽ ἐλαχίστου ἀξίοις ἔργοις ἐφέστηκεν.
"And what are these?" said she. "I think for my part," I said, "not things of least worth, unless the queen bee in the hive has attended to work of little worth."
[18] ἐμοὶ γάρ τοι, ἔφη φάναι, καὶ οἱ θεοί, ὦ γύναι, δοκοῦσι πολὺ διεσκεμμένως μάλιστα τὸ ζεῦγος τοῦτο συντεθεικέναι ὃ καλεῖται θῆλυ καὶ ἄρρεν, ὅπως ὅτι ὠφελιμώτατον ᾖ αὑτῷ εἰς τὴν κοινωνίαν.
"For indeed to me," I said, "it is made clear, and the gods, O woman, think it good very prudently indeed to have put together this yoke-pair, which is called female and male, so that most beneficial in which itself into the partnership. [query]
[19] πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ τοῦ μὴ ἐκλιπεῖν ζῴων γένη τοῦτο τὸ ζεῦγος κεῖται μετ᾽ ἀλλήλων τεκνοποιούμενον, ἔπειτα τὸ γηροβοσκοὺς κεκτῆσθαι ἑαυτοῖς ἐκ τούτου τοῦ ζεύγους τοῖς γοῦν ἀνθρώποις πορίζεται: ἔπειτα δὲ καὶ ἡ δίαιτα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις οὐχ ὥσπερ τοῖς κτήνεσίν ἐστιν ἐν ὑπαίθρῳ, ἀλλὰ στεγῶν δεῖται δῆλον ὅτι.
For first, on the one hand, that the race of the beasts should not be forsaken, this yoke-pair was laid down for means of breeding children with one another, then to acquire tending in old age to human beings at least is furnished from this yoke-pair: then also the way of life for human beings is not just like flocks and herds in the open air, but it's clear that [way of life] needs roofs.
[20] δεῖ μέντοι τοῖς μέλλουσιν ἀνθρώποις ἕξειν ὅ τι εἰσφέρωσιν εἰς τὸ στεγνὸν τοῦ ἐργασομένου τὰς ἐν τῷ ὑπαίθρῳ ἐργασίας. καὶ γὰρ νεατὸς καὶ σπόρος καὶ φυτεία καὶ νομαὶ ὑπαίθρια ταῦτα πάντα ἔργα ἐστίν: ἐκ τούτων δὲ τὰ ἐπιτήδεια γίγνεται.
However it is necessary for the people who intend to bring the open air work that they contribute into the covered dwelling of working. For ploughing of fallow land too and sowing and planting and open-air grazing, all these are work: from these serviceable things come into being.
