Books 2009: 73-74

73. Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

I really, really liked The Hunger Games. Futuristic gladiatorial games with extra added totalitarian state and an adolescent protagonist with a really great first-person voice just hits my narrative kinks. This, the second book of a projected trilogy, does very similar things but ups the stakes. It's not just Katniss' life at stake, anymore.

74. Amanda Downum, The Drowning City.

Three things. One, I like [livejournal.com profile] stillsostrange. Two, I really like her book. Three - there is no third thing.

Oh, wait, there is. Said book contains necromancy, intrigue, espionage, gunpowder, jungles and explosions. And a volcano. And a really excellent sense of place and character. Go forth and read it, internets. I'm pretty sure you'll like it too.

Today is my day off. Thus, I must fight entropy in the form of laundry. Among other things. And figure out how long before I go to karate this evening I should eat actual dinner, because it's been a while since I did exercise after food.
