I spent an hour and a half on a cold, dark beach tonight with seven other people, three torches, and a candle, while the sky spat at us, and the wind gusted sand in our faces, and beetles crawled into our socks, all in the service of Art.
Poetry, people. It's worth a little discomfort.
Although maybe not quite that much.

85. Apuleius, The Golden Ass, Penguin Classics, London, 2004, trans. E.J. Kenney.
Written in the second century A.D. and also known as the Metamorphoses, this is the story of Lucius, a young man of good family whose curiosity results in his transformation into a donkey. After many unpleasant trials, he is restored to his human shape by the goddess Isis, to whose service he resolves to dedicate the rest of his life.
Also, there is sex, death, murder, robbery, salacious stories, and many other ugly things typical of the time at which this was written. The women are nearly all shameless, immoral and wicked (the author's words), and the men are pretty unpleasant themselve.
