Alice in Wonderland
Mar. 20th, 2010 03:32 pmI have been to the cinema more times in the last seven days than in any ordinary seven months. First to see Greenzone, which was good, if not exactly uplifting. Then to see Invictus, which is quite a gem of a film. And finally, to see Alice in Wonderland. Which is... quite ambitious and not entirely successful, but completely charming.
It also passes the Bechdel test. More than once.
All the actors are quite excellent, particularly Johnny Depp. Who, despite being under very heavy makeup, manages to do more with a couple of gestures and the inflection of his voice than many actors can do with their whole bodies.
I consider it a lack in cinema that this is the first film I can recall in which a handsome young woman in well-fitting armour slays her own monster. There need to be more films with handsome young women in well-fitting armour slaying monsters. Not that I have any objection to handsome young men, you understand, but, well. Parity of representation is a consumation devoutedly to be wished.
