Oddly, lots of battles and a focus on whatever higher power you either believe in or have been socially indoctinated into go together.
Even nominalistically theist countries (read as Nazi Germany & varieties of stzte structured communism) have to replace religion wwith Cults of Personality, Cults of State, or Cults of Nationalist Continuity.
No one prays quite like pre-,intra,and post battle warriors.
Given the current concentration of Evangelical Chistians in the US armed services right now, combined with a scarey when you really look at it growth of some pretty rigid Evangelical sects, I can understand any writer with a platform in the US using it as a soap box for advocating deed-based beliefs,religion theme in a battle oriented series.
