Books 2010: 74-81

74-75. John Jackson Miller et al, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Commencement and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Dueling Ambitions.

I like Star Wars. I like graphic novels. Some of the panels in these feel a little bit cluttered, but it's good, light fun.

76. Jack McDevitt, The Devil's Eye.

An Alex Benedict novel. Not archaeology in space, alas, and a book which felt as though the author had lost all control whatsoever over pacing and tension. It dragged where it should have sped and sped where it should have taken its leisurely time, and the characterisation - not McDevitt's best point at the best of times - was even flatter than usual. Although I did enjoy it, in the final sum, and may be judging it more harshly than it deserves because I was hoping for another Polaris.

77. Jane Fletcher, Wolfsbane Winter.

A light-hearted fantasy romance. With bandits.

78. Jane Fletcher, The High Priest and the Idol.

Fourth book in the Lyremouth series. Magic, politics, relationships. Fun.

79-81. K.E. Mills, An Accidental Sorcerer, Witches Incorporated, and Wizard, Squared.

Oh, my. These are good. Funny, don't take themselves too seriously, and have a lot of snark. Gerald Dunwoody is a wizard who manages to blow up a factory and finds himself with a shitload of power he never expected to have and a series of interesting adventures. Which he also did not expect to have.

Really good fun.

I appear to have eaten something that's caused me to break out in hives. Itching is torture. Torture most abominable.

I'm almost looking forward to getting to Athens, because the humidity there is only three quarters of what it is here. Even if it's 34 Celsius by day. Thessaloniki might be all of two degrees less hot. Tips for surviving, guys?

Drink all the water you can hold. Drink before you get thirsty. Wear sunscreen. Take a tepid shower in the morning, and don't dry your hair--put it in a tight bun, if you can, and it'll cool your head all day.

I have hair short enough to pass for a guy from behind. Fortunately, this means pouring bottled water over top has proved a viable survival strategy in the past. :P

A good hat, long sleeves in any shade of white or buff, and a neckerchief soaked in ice water on a regular basis.
