Adventures in cooking, January 2012

I have discovered a hitherto unforeseen problem with making soup so thick that it stands up on its own, and so full of fibre and nutrients that half a bowl provides a whole meal. (It is more vegetable-bean-barley stew than soup.)

It is this: my thick, brown, mushy soup was made in a pot that has an eight-bowl capacity. I am but one single lonesome human, and I'm all out of freezable containers!

Soup, people. It is more complicated an endeavour than I expected.

We use freezer-thickness Ziploc bags for a lot of the stuff, like soups and chili, which will not have to reside in the freezer for long. They pack relatively flat, making it easier to fit them in a moderately stuffed freezer, and you can write on them so you don't accidentally thaw chicken stock when you were aiming for chicken soup.

I have to learn how to cook real food at some point, after all. :)

You could try soup for breakfast, as well as soup for lunch.

Just the ticket before going out on a watching brief during the winter months...
