Books 2012: 129-132
nonfiction
129. Martyn J. Powell, Piss-pots, printers, and public opinion in eighteenth-century Dublin: Richard Twiss's "Tour in Ireland." Four Courts Press, Dublin, 2009.
A brief and entertaining account of the small print-war that emerged after the publication of Richard Twiss's unflattering Tour in Ireland. The author was roundly satirised, and chamberpots with his image on the interior become quite the fad.
130. Maighréad Ní Mhurchadha, The customs and excise service in Fingal, 1684-1765: sober, active, and bred to the sea Four Courts Press, Dublin, 1999.
Brief discussion of the operation of the revenue commissioners' underlings in north county Dublin in the 18th century. Interesting.
131. Kenneth Milne, The Dublin liberties, 1600-1850. Fourt Courts Press, Dublin, 2009.
Brief and interesting discussion of the liberties adjoining the city of Dublin, and their legal rights and privileges.
132. Richard Holmes, Redcoat: The British Soldier in the Age of Horse and Musket. HarperCollins, London, 2001.
An interesting and sympathetic overview of the redcoat from the early part of the 18th century to the Crimea.
Today I went for a dip in the Irish sea. Still quite cold, but much less so than I'd been anticipating.
