Dr. Me?

I defended my thesis on Monday afternoon. Viva voce. Successfully: I have minor corrections (the examiners' reports are, between them, 20 pages long) and once that is done I can go do new things.

I enjoyed myself, once I forgot to be terrified. And afterwards some people even came out to help me celebrate, which meant a very great deal to me. People! Showing up to mark this milestone in my life! I felt... cared for.

So many people have helped me get this far, with support moral and otherwise. So much encouragement. I have been deeply honoured by it, and I do not forget how very much I owe to so very many.

Yesterday, I went for a walk and for a swim and got myself sunburned. Today all I want to do is sleep. It is somewhat frustrating. Life feels very strange.

Well done.
I enjoyed my viva, too, after the scared bit died down. They are about topics we love, after all, so it makes sense.

I never did an oral defense for my thesis -- it was optional in my department and I always suspected that half my committee never actually read the text before approving it and didn't want to have to admit that. I'm glad that your experience was at least partly joyful.

I think a couple days of decompression are in order, but then it would probably be good to draw up a to-do list and power through the corrections so you can move on ahead.

Thanks. It was really remarkably fun, after it stopped feeling like an interrogation and became more like a discussion.

You're telling me! There's so much I want to get done this summer, and corrections will eat up all my time if I let them. :)

Thank you.

(And can I just say that I am really thrilled to have a gender-neutral address I can insist on real soon now?)

MIGHTY FIST PUMP OF THE DOCTORATE!

When my brother finally had his dissertation approved, after quite a few years of research and edits and so forth, we held a massive party. Spouse and I designed business cards that said Dr. Witmeyer.

I love being able to pull out "Dr" when people either miss-title me (or would that be "mrs-title me"?) or offer me only the choice between "miss" and "mrs". Some day I hope to be able to use a prepared rant if someone starts harping on the "only medical doctors should..." line, that involves phrases like "jumped-up barber-surgeons" and "the noble profession of philosophy" and whatnot.

Compared to the noble profession of philosophy, medical doctors are technicians! Or something. :P

One of the best bits about the process, that.

Well done and well done and well done indeed. *hug*
