wind. water. salt. tears.
Oct. 9th, 2010 09:08 pmOctober's not a bad time for swimming.
The sea hasn't yet lost the warmth of summer, but the high-summer jellyfish have moved on. If the weather's mild, as it was today, you don't even freeze in the wind getting in and out of the water.
But the sea was high and wild, with a three-foot swell and thunderous breakers churning along the shoreline, so what I did can more properly be described as dipping and playing in the waves. Not swimming, because you could only paddle for a few minutes before another great white horse came along to drive you under.
It was fabulous. Fan-fucking-tastic. Makes you feel alive in ways that are hard to describe. The wind whipping the marram grass, the tide high and reeking of weed and salt, the waves that sucked you down and pushed you back -
There were a bunch of kiteboarders out as well, all wetsuited up with brightly-coloured kites in orange and red and green, racing on the tops of the waves. A good day. A damn good day.
I should really type up my bursary application and fill in the bibliography. But I'm too sleepy.
Tomorrow.
