And since the god assigned to the woman the guarding of the things brought inside, knowing that for the guarding it is not worse to be fearful-spirited, he gave also to the woman a larger share of fear than to the man. And knowing that there will be need indeed to aid, if someone does wrong, the one who has the outside work, to this latter indeed he gave a greater portion of courage.

And since both need to give and to take, he established for both in the middle memory and attention, so that you could not determine which of the two races, female or male, claims a larger share of these.

And he established for both in the middle the possession of power over self-control, and the god made authority to whichever is the better, whether the man or the woman, to carry off for themselves a full share of the good of this.

And because each of both are not well-suited by nature to everything, because of this they need each other, and the yoke-pair to itself has happened to be more beneficial, since what the one lacks, the other can do.

Today I went to the library of the École Francais and made my thesis grow by a thousand words. The nice boy who mans the desk helped sort things so that I could go look at the archives, too. Although I didn't get permission to see them until about 1500, and by that point I was brain-dead and starving, and had to make my excuses to the archivist at 1530. I do have permission to come back tomorrow, though.

Carbon paper from excavation reports in 1941. The EFA was running excavations while Europe was at war and Vichy France was appointing the School's director. I am not sure whether this is extraordinarily cool or somewhat disturbing. Maybe both. I am this excited about having been allowed to read them. Really. I was too excited to talk when the nice archivist handed me the folder. I was afraid if I said the wrong thing, she would take them away.

I'm weird, aren't I?

Anyway, I did some shopping, staggered out for a run, translated some ancient Greek, and all in all, feel that this has been quite a productive day.
