You know, I really need to get around this inability to settle down and study. It might just prove problematic.

I have a confession.

For the last three - four? - months, I haven't had the emotional energy to think about writing original fiction. I am sure many people might admit this to be quite normal, with a thesis and final year exams to dwell upon.

On the other hand, I've started writing fanfiction in that span of time. It doesn't require investment. It doesn't matter to me in the same way. It started as a way to keep my hand in, to keep some half-assed memory of how to write sentences and paragraphs that aren't academic nonsense. But I've written something like fifteen thousand words of it in the last month alone. It doesn't require commitment.

Perhaps it says something about me that I find this worrying.

Today, I committed the extravagance of purchasing new tshirts. It feels very unusual, since it's almost a year since I bought a tshirt.

(Yes. I wear things until they fall apart and then some.)

Have I ever told you how I recovered from my PhD exams? Reading the most formulaic romance novels I could find. Bags of them. Five or six books a day. I knew I was ready to start working when I threw them against the wall for bad writing. I don't see the difference, really.

Heh. How bad were they? Really?

Over Christmas, I was playing the Dragon Age: Origins videogame? And since I finished it, I have been writing fanfiction for it. It could be worse, I suppose. At least I'm writing. This must count towards my million (and then some) words of crap.

They were REALLY bad. It wasn't the good stuff you find praised on Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. No, these were the "fill a grocery bag for $4" at the used-book place across the street from campus. Reeeeeeeeeally not quality literature.

A million words of crap, or regrowing brain cells, or both. I'm not going to judge your pressure valve. Besides, during this job hunt, I'm watching the BBC Merlin and feeling like a perv. I got no room to throw stones--at least you're doing something creative!

That bad, huh?

...*does not look forward to finishing masters by research, then*

Ah, Merlin. *is within six degrees of separation from famous actor* Poor wasted good actors. Poor terrible writers/directors/producers.

PhD exams are different. I had a really good time doing my master's. For one thing, my MA advisor was much, much nicer than my PhD one.

Romance novels were pretty much all I read through much of my last year of college. Every weekend I'd lie on my bed for at least half a day and do nothing else but read nonsense.

heh. I have at least one shirt that I've owned since I was in high school (so...almost 20 years?) I still wear it to do chores and work out.

I *used* to wear it to go out and run errands as recently as just a few months ago. But then I noticed that it actually had holes.

I still have a tshirt from when I was twelve. (That would be twelve years ago.) I still sleep in it sometimes.
