Letters from Athens

Dearest friends,
I am writing to you from Athens, where I am spending tonight and tomorrow, my last hours in Greece. I have been in this country now more than five weeks, and until this evening, my worst experience was catching the wrong bus.
Tonight, however, I write to you having been pickpocketed on the metro at the airport. And very professionally done it was, too. Fortunately, me being a cautious sort, the wallet with my money in it was in a different pocket from the pocket containing everything else. And my emergency cash lives in my backpack, so I'm not stranded and penniless. On the other hand, I am annoyed, and more so because the city police, to whom I went to make a police report so I can make an insurance claim, told me I had to go back to the airport and make my report there. Curse them!
I'll be doing that tomorrow afternoon, before I fly home.
Well, right now I'm enjoying unlimited broadband and a twitchy chat program. Tomorrow my plan is sleeping in, wandering down to the Archaeological Museum for a little while, and going early to the airport. Remind me, when I get home, to tell you all about getting lost on Monday in the wilds near Thessaloniki, where buses stop but three times a day, and how we got back from the village so small it did not have an ATM.
Until soon.
