Sometimes it seems as though I spend half my life waiting for trains.
Train stations are odd spaces. They breed a peculiar kind of patience, a detached sense of hanging suspended in time. Sometimes this can be a good thing: sometimes it's a space to sit and contemplate beginnings and endings, perpetual motion, entropy, the nature of dreams...
Sometimes there's a sea-wind with an edge as ragged as old garden shears, or you're soaked from your head right down to your bones thanks to an unexpected rainburst. Or it's one of those rare scorching days, you're overdressed, and the merest whiff of river-water is enough to have you panting for the sea.
The philosophy of train stations and bus stops, ferry ports and boarding gates, is hurry up and wait. Wait, and while you're waiting, enjoy what you can, tolerate the rest. Eventually, you'll get where you mean to go.
It's cliché to say that the journey matters more than the destination - but in the end, we're all going to the same place. We'll be dead a long time. You might as well set out to enjoy the ride in the meanwhile.
I admit, bringing a book can be a big help.
