I've been assigned a swanky study carrel in the swankiest building on campus, the Long Room Hub. The building itself's only two years old: there's wood panelling everywhere and fabulous views of Front and Fellows Square out great big windows; skylights; a central atrium; a "Conversation Space" with comfy chairs; a kitchen that has a dishwasher; and a shower in the basement. My own desk. My own desk-locker. Shelves. An actual office chair - padded, with swivel.

I'm so excited about this, I'm having a hard time settling in to work. The chair swivels! I can look out the windows! Walls and ceiling are all panelled in lovely rich wood.

I feel like up till now, I've been travelling coach. And out of the blue someone upgraded me to first class. It doesn't get much better than this - funding, a fancy study carrel, undeserved respect. Now to live up to expectations, finish my Greek, and take some more notes.

Yay! Your own space is so good.
I did misread 'carrel' and 'camel' at first, though, which led to an interesting image!

One's own study camel... I think there's a steampunk story in there. Maybe biopunk. :)

It definitely feels like a step up. I feel validated! Legitimate! I are real researcher, this are SRS reading room, sort of thing.

...Not that I'm over-excited about it, or anything.

Well. Maybe a little.

I think it's a perfectly proper thing to be excited about.

*radiates excitement*

..although not right now. Right now, I think I radiate exhaustion.

How awesome! Nothing like that even remotely existed in my graduate studies, but as a Resident, I got an office. Small, out of the way, but private. Your study carrel sounds positively heavenly. Mazel tov!

It is only for the few, the proud, the exceedingly lucky. Whose departments went to bat for them.

That sounds really nice. I was in the Long Room Hub in June, as part of an academic conference held at Trinity College. We were variously in lots of Arts building teaching rooms (most not wowing) and the Long Room Hub. Oh and had we formal lunch in the Dining Room. I was using my wheelchair so getting around the campus was *interesting*. The panel in the Long Room Hub was particularly memorable though, and the decor and surroundings really helped.

The Arts building is nuclear bunker chic, I think.

Campus, not the most accessible in the world, alas. Although since two years ago there are actual flat paths across the cobbles. Which is a small something.

Generally the paths were good, but the worst bit for the wheelchair was getting from the Arts building to the Long Room Hub or west side of Old Library. That path was still the original cobbles, so going by wheelchair over there was a nightmare. And it was our direct route to the Arts Building, from the north end of the campus, so we had to traverse it multiple times.

That's brilliant! When I was doing my Phud, I got kicked out of a lovely old room which I shared with the drawing officer, and shunted down into a dingy horrible basement...
