To Lion-Spirited Herakles
I sing of Herakles, Zeus’s son, who Alcmene bore
-Mightiest and best of all who walk upon the earth -
In Thebes where the dancing-floors are fair,
After she lay with the cloud-dark son of Kronos;
He who once in his wandering over the whole earth –
so wide that even the gods cannot measure – and the sea
in expeditions on Lord Eurysthenes’s behalf,
dealt in so many wicked-reckless things, and endured [as] many [more].
But now he dwells on snow-girt Olympus,
Enjoying a noble seat, and he has graceful-ankled Hebe [as a wife].
Hail, Lord, son of Zeus! Grant me both distinction and wealth. [/fame and happiness]
