Another day closer
Jun. 1st, 2005 10:35 pmDays to first exam: 7
Days to last exam: 19
Subjects studied today: too few
Hours spent studying: not enough
Looking back at the last excerpt from WIP I posted, I noticed that I might have a small problem. Like Terry Pratchett's Captain Carrot, I'm guilty of abuse and overuse of the common comma.
We,ll, a,t le,ast I, am not, writing, li,ke. thi,s.
I should be grateful for small things :-). Like commas. And use them less often.
Thing is, I'm in the habit of using them for English essay work. Lots and lots of commas, and semi-colons; and even colons: they make lovely long train-of-thought sentences possible. And at exam speed, all I'm doing is writing train-of-thought. How can I do otherwise? When I stop, the train comes off the rails.
So. Went walking today. In a park. With trees. Lovely, old, green trees.
I need trees. They make me feel... better. Relaxed. Human, as opposed to part-of-machine.
You don't get that 'round here, so it necessitated a fairly substantial drive first. Still, didn't waste all that petrol just to go for a walk: met friends, too.
It rained. I got wet. It was great!
The only thing that would have made this day better would be if I hadn't been such an eejit and walloped my knee and foot yesterday. I have a black ring of bruising around my big toe this evening. All my own fault, of course.
It really looks strange. Very strange. Strangest of all, it doesn't really seem to hurt.
And in writing news, another 3 pages and 750 words. I'm feeling good about this, but I'm in an unreasonably good mood tonight, so it probably doesn't count.
Excerpt
--
We came to the glideway, and Daav peeled off with a cheerful, "Later!"
Caba stared after him as the glideway carried us off. "I'm not sure I trust him," she muttered as he passed out of view down the curving corridor.
I said nothing. How could I, when that had been my first reaction to his query, too?
But then, most days I wasn't sure that I trusted anyone. Even myself.
