So last night I went with the parent to a trad session that included guest musicians from Sweden. There was also lemon meringue pie. It was cool.

The Swedish musicians played waltzes, one or two polkas, a couple of mazurkas, and a couple of other tunes I couldn't identify. The contrast between the measured, upbeat, even jaunty choices of the Swedish guys (on three nickel harps, two violins, a flute and an accordion) with the much less measured, raw, almost angry jigs, reels, polkas and the odd solo of a sad song about emigration or the Spanish Civil War by the Irish guys (one bagpipe, several fiddles, two guitars, a banjo, a flute and a mandolin) was interesting, to say the least.

The Swedish players were on the whole younger, too.

Today, there was running. Maybe a kilometer, perhaps a little more: the weather was fine, and I needed to remind my muscles that they work for me, not the other way around. I do appear to have strained my elbows and my right knee somewhat, though, so I guess I'll have to be careful if I get up to karate tomorrow.

I'm starting to feel the need to study. This day, three weeks, my exams start. That's plenty of time, right?

I can start tomorrow after karate.

Books 2008: 55-56.

55. Kim Harrison, Where Demons Dare. (US title, The Outlaw Demon Wails)

If you like the rest of the series, you'll like this one. It breaks no new ground; it's pretty undemanding, really, but then, I'm not particularly in the mood for demanding fiction.

56. Richelle Mead, Vampire Academy.

Okay, this is quality YA. Plenty of roller derby, and even if there might be a slight surplus of boyfriend, the set-up is interesting and the characters pretty compelling. Also, a distinct lack of talking down to one's audience.

If I'm ever unbroke again in my life, I'll be looking for the sequel.
