Books 2008: 60
60. Kate Elliott, Spirit Gate.
A free ebook from Tor's promotional newsletter. This is not a book I would've read otherwise: I've passed it in the bookshop, and not only is it uncomfortably large, the cover copy never thrilled me.
I need thrilling cover copy and first three pages to pick up an uncomfortably large book these days: once burned, twice shy, as they say. (Except in my case it's more than once burned at this point.)
Surprise, surprise. This turned out to be quite the excellent book. It takes a little patience, perhaps, especially after the initial switch from Joss's point of view to the story as told by Mai and Shai. But there is a sufficiently interesting world, a pleasantly complicated plot in train, and some very compelling characters.
And flying eagles. I have to say, I quite liked the flying eagles.
This appears to be the start of a series. I look forward with interest to reading the next installment.
