Books 2009: 84

84. Cherie Priest, Boneshaker.

This? This is a fabulous little - I want to say baroque, but that's inaccurate: it manages to be both baroque in setting, and compact, spare and lucid in plot, pacing and tone - fabulous little masterpiece of a book.

Set in an alternate 19th century Seattle, in a world where the American civil war has dragged on for decades and a mad scientist/inventor all but destroyed Seattle half by accident fifteen years before, this is the story of a woman who goes into a dying city to rescue her son.

Also. It has airships. And zombies.

As you no doubt have guessed, I liked it rather a lot.

Tomorrow I climb. And Monday evening I have an evening poetry reading to attend on the beach. (No doubt it will be cold. But I can live with that.)

Also, the (local) government finally ponied up my grant. So I'll live a little while longer, and maybe be able to get that book on Middle Egyptian.

Life is good, even if I need more exercise. :)
