I owe my uncle a great debt of gratitude. He's recently come back from a trip to the US, and brought back the US release of Naomi Novik's Throne of Jade. Wheeee!

In Temeraire (released in the US as His Majesty's Dragon), Novik introduced the dragon Temeraire and Laurence, British Navy captain turned aviator. In Throne of Jade, their relationship is under threat: the Chinese have discovered that the dragon egg intended for the emperor Napoleon has hatched in British hands, and sent an embassy demanding Temeraire's repatriation. Threatened with separation from his beloved dragon - and court martial for his defiance - Laurence is forced to accompany Temeraire to the Far East. The voyage is long and dangerous, but what awaits them in China may prove more perilous yet to Laurence, and to his relationship with the Celestial dragon Temeraire.

Novik has a deft touch. I read this in one sitting - one gulp, one might say. It's every bit as good as Temeraire - indeed, it may even be better. It has a sea-serpent, for one thing. I did miss the relationships with the other aviators and dragons of Temeraire's wing - only Laurence and his crew go to the Far East - but dragons! China! Wheeeee!

(And it's ours! Ours, our own, our preciousss!)

Ahem. Excuse me. I get rather carried away by my enthusiasm. But definitely, make time to read this book.
