February 28th summation:

The wheels kind of came off in the final stages of PhD finishing. I informed everyone for whom I do work that I was unlikely to submit anything before April, and received an all-clear: but my brain is at this point broken for the purposes of anything other than housework, filing, and playing with the cat.

While Christmas is a culturally-mandated celebration, it is not one I actually enjoy. I enjoy giving gifts. I just wish mutual gift-giving could be divorced from the religious mummery, lip-service to which appears to be required. Because the religious stuff feels oppressive and makes my insides hurt.

Anyway.

To-do list:

1. Write 2000 words of thesis chapter at least. 3600 would be better, but seems unlikely.

2. Write column for January

3. Review Touch.

4a. Read The Almost Girl.
4b. Review The Almost Girl.

1. Finish reading the incredibly tedious Eidolon.
1a. Review said tedious book for Vector.

2. Review Sharon Lee's Carousel Sun for Tor.com.
3. Review Barbara Hambly's Kindred of Darkness for Tor.com.

4. Watch Minoan-influenced Doctor Who episode.
5. Integrate into much-neglected paper.
5a. Edit paper for submission to Foundation and actually submit. (The worst they can say is NO YOU IDIOT DO NOT WANT, and I've been putting off actually doing this for far too long.)

6. Write 2000 words of thesis chapter.
7. Meet supervisor and consult about previously drafted chapters.

8a. Go to gym for cardio training.
8b. Go to gym again for mixed cardio and strength training.

...If that doesn't take me at least until Saturday, I shall be much astonished.

Things I know I need to do in the rest of the month include:

- write another 2000 words of thesis chapter at least.
- write column for January
- make decent draft of article for submission to journal
- contact Ideo about spring reviews
- gym, and again gym, and again gym
- be a social human and also write emails to people
- read and take notes from library books on loan

...but are, of course, not limited to the above.

If anyone has any energy to spare, I could use some.

Is now here, and complete, at 13 entries and something on the order of 10,000 words.

I may talk about my half-day holiday in Liverpool on Tuesday soon. I have Opinions on museums who bombard people with audiovis.

But not right now.

To-do list for this week:

THESIS THESIS THESIS
Turn up funding claim for my one-sixth of expenses.
Read two books.
Review said books.
Write up books read to date this year.
Attempt to write SH column on conference.
hawkwing_lb: (DA2 isabela facepalm)
Reviews:

Ink for Vector
The Kassa Gambit for Ideomancer
One other (to be finalised) title for Ideomancer

due January.

I expect other reviews will turn up onto my plate eventually. But I'm in no rush.

Column for Tor.com:

I am all squared away until mid-January. So before then, I need to rough out a plan for the first six months, and line up some interesting interviewees, AKA hapless victims: any volunteers?

There are 26 weeks in the first half of 2013. Let's say three or four interviews, leaving me 20 weeks to plan for.

So, let's say I do a series of mini-series focusing on writers of (epic) fantasy, 4 posts per writer, 3 writers... let's say Sherwood Smith, Kate Elliott, and Tanya Huff, to begin with. That's 12 weeks covered, maybe 14 if I get carried away. Depending on how things go, I may want a post or two free to deal with visual media (Oblivion shows in the spring, and perhaps there may be Hobbit or Hansel and Gretel Witchhunters or The Host opinionating, and May and June are full of skiffy films), so call that 15 weeks. 16 weeks, if I find a boxset of something to get excited about. (Which I'm pretty sure I can. I haven't finished Hunted yet, after all.)

That leaves 4 weeks to plan for before the end of June. (Possibly less, depending on how excited about visual media I get, but we'll say 4.)

Want to start doing a read of the women authors in the Gollancz SF Masterworks list, so let's say two of them.

That leaves 2 weeks. Any suggestions for what to fill them with? (I'd love to do female-authored short fic collections, but it's not like I can really afford to splash out on my own copies, if I'm being smart about money.)
hawkwing_lb: (Default)
Thesis:
- finish third chapter by month end
- figure out WTF I'm doing?

Reviews:
- Sharps for Vector
- one more for Ideomancer
- giving up on the review copy for Tor.com arriving, but that too, if it ever comes.
- pitch more?

Column:
- finish up brief space-opera focus, 2-3 more posts
- remember to interview author in November
- plan some more?

Paperwork:
- apply for January travel funding by month end.
- run errand for fellow PG by Thursday afternoon
- inquire of paperwork responsibilities re: funding with supervisor

Also, I would like my strength back already now. So's I can do all these things, and others, including meeting people for doing stuff.

Fucking sicknesses. Next time, I will drink lemon and honey and whiskey instead of guafenisin in treacle. Maybe that will help more faster.

To-do list

Tour prep:

Tuesday: Epidauros
Wednesday: Corinth, South Slope Acropolis
Thursday: Agora
Friday: Delphi
Saturday: Kerameikos

Other stuff:

More columns for Tor.com.
Read the unbound galley that came through my door and review it.
Write up the booklog.
Read all the books.
Finish the fucking chapter.
hawkwing_lb: (Aveline is not amused)
What do I have to do before Monday?

1. Translate 40 lines of Greek.
2. Advance conference paper to first draft completion stage. (2K words from now approx.)
3. Make some inquiries about reviews.
4. Exercise.

Remind myself that I will not have enough time to read any of the library books I requested this week (the two by Ian McDonald, the one by Catherine Bush that [livejournal.com profile] leahbobet was talking about) and so shouldn't fret myself about going to the library: the books can go back to stacks, and all will be well.

Things I am not going to do:

1. Worry about how I will survive from August 2012 if the funding doesn't happen.
hawkwing_lb: (No dumping dead bodies)
Constant:

- give thought to finding/fitting in more freelance work to meet our goal of Not Being Hungry this summer

Before Monday:

- email re: Greek
- blog books
- read Throne of the Crescent Moon and begin review

Tuesday:

[- visit Dept. of Foreign Affairs to acquire pointless nonsense for US tax paperwork
- jujutsu] Fail Tuesday

Before Saturday:

- finish major funding app biblo and picky bits [which you've been putting off]
- minor travel funding app [so can pay for Greek flights when bill comes due]
- progress on presentation for March 10
- Greek class and homework (ancient)
- Greek class and homework (modern)(written)(audio)
[- climbing] Fail climbing

This evening's climbing encompassed four lead climbs and four top-ropes, pushing myself hard. I still feel as though I'm not pushing myself hard enough when it comes to exercise-related things, especially since there was no jujutsu yesterday.

Things to do before Monday:
- Finish funding app stuff
- email supervisor about getting some feedback
- modern Greek homework (composition) (oral comprehension)
- climbing Friday
- karate Saturday

- progress on second paper for presentation
hawkwing_lb: (DA 2 scaring the piss)
Today's total of accomplished things stands at: two Greek classes attended, one modern, one ancient. Soon I will go to the gym for a short run and some climbing.

Then tonight and tomorrow the plan is to finish a draft of my seminar paper, finish a review, prep both sets of Greek for Friday, meet someone for coffee, and go to jujutsu. I may have to accept the fact that the Greek will not happen until Wednesday. Which is also supposed to have climbing. Thursday is scheduled Friend Geek Time, and Friday is for classes and making the seminar to have a presentation with pictures, because otherwise my words will make little sense.

This is all I am doing this week. It doesn't seem like a lot.

I refuse to worry about more. (Although, dear universe, it would be nice if I were to be paid this week? It would be very pleasant indeed?)

(Universe: *resounding silence*)
