Until I came home to check my email, at least. My Postgraduate Funding Progress Report is due by January 31, and if it is found unsatisfactory, reimbursement of moneys will be sought.

This is the last thing my anxiety needed to hear.

Although I bought holiday gifts and went to the gym - at last - so up until then, it was a pretty good day. Managed some exercise biking - 5K - and a stagger on the treadmill, which turned to be pathetic intervals: my wind is gone, and it was as much as I could manage to cover 2 miles in 29 minutes. (Fifteen minute miles. Goddamn, I could hike faster than that. Or I used to be able to.)

Benchpressed 10kg plus the bar, though, without the Smith cage. So that feels good.

Books 2012: 266-269

266. Jennifer Crusie, Faking It. Ebook from Kobo.

So, that happened. Funny quirky comedy-of-errors romance. I enjoyed it surprisingly well.

267. Marie Lu, Legend. Publication details not to hand.

YA dystopia, well-written if a touch slight. High angst quotient. People who like this sort of thing (which sometimes includes me) will like this.

268. James P. Blaylock, The Aylesford Skull. Titan Books, 2012. Review copy from Titan Books.

Longer review forthcoming from Tor.com, eventually in internet time and shortly in real-life time. A novel in the mode of eighties steampunk, languorous of pace, involving a nemesis in the mode of Professor Moriarty with cameos from Arthur Conan Doyle. It didn't hit my kinks, but it's not a bad book.

For the log:

Stayed up all night. Spent too much money on ebooks and read them all. Went for a run at 1130, pathetic wind and stamina, managed maybe 1.5 miles out intervalling, 1.5 miles back mostly walking. Showered, slept in the afternoon 1315-1830. Am now reading and taking notes for thesis: have progressed through 50 pages of research book while taking notes.

During my stagger-run, I took my shoes off and paddled in the sea. Because why the hell not? It was a fine morning with a high tide, and the sea was ice on my ankles, and I swear it was only modesty and the lack of a towel that kept me from diving all the way in. That'd fix what ailed me, right enough.

12km in 30:00, exercise bike. Benchpress: was a mess, moved out of the Smith cage, had trouble lifting 3x10 30kg. Bicep curl: also a mess, 2x12 14kg. Back extensions, 3x10. 2 miles treadmill in 26:20. Rowing cooldown, 1km in 5:15.

Mass: 102.4-103.2kg
hawkwing_lb: (Helps if they think you're crazy)
5K bike, 11:00. 2K rowing, 9:36. 3K treadmill, too damn long, at 24:41.

It was a gym-sponsored challenge, so there was encouragement. But when I get home I'll be nicking my mum's difene spray for my poor abused muscles, because ow.

Mass: 100.9-101.0kg, gym scales.

Shortly I am to Plato class. And then afterwards I think I will nap in the shiny shiny hub before eating my packed dinner (my mother packed me a dinner, because triathlon: I have the best parent) and going to the fancy evening lecture.

And so, onwards.
hawkwing_lb: (Default)
6km in 15:00, exercise bike. 3x12 reps @40kg, benchpress. 3x10, back extensions. 3x12 reps @ 40kg, seated row. 3x8 reps @18kg, bicep curl. Treadmill, intervals, 3.2km in 26:00.

Mass: 100.3-101.3kg. (The gym scales seems rather labile.)

Greek accomplished. New thesis chapter file document opened. I suspect I need to make an outline for What Goes Here. Unexpected socialising with a friend-like person who has just submitted her thesis.

Tonight the train has internet. The future, can has?
hawkwing_lb: (DA2 isabela facepalm)
The first gym visit since the evil cold of evilness. Exercise bike: 12km in 32:30. Benchpress: 3x5 @40kg. Seated row: 3x8 @50kg. Bicep curl: 3x10 @14kg (7kg/arm). Back extensions: 3x10 (those lads hurt). Running: 1.5miles in 19:00, intervals.

Body-mass: 100.4-101kg.

(So I lost weight while I was sick.)

I'm not that much bothered about my mass, but ideally I'd like to get it back down to under 95kg, where it was a few years ago, to put less stress on my joints. Or at least not increase the stress I'm putting on my joints, since arthritis runs in the family and I like being physically active - I'd like to still be physically active when I'm sixty and seventy, should I live so long.

Now to Plato class, and pain and woe.
hawkwing_lb: (In Vain)
So, turns out when I go to the gym in the mornings, running first thing is contra-indicated. I need to warm up first before I try going flat out. I'll remember that for next time.

Still. Some messy running to start with. 12km in 32:40 on the exercise bike. Benchpress: 1x5 @50kg, 1x5 @65kg, 3x5 @60kg. Seated row: 3x12 @40kg. Bicep curl: 3x12 @16kg (8kg per arm). Back extensions: 3x10. Lateral raise: 3x12 @10kg (5kg per arm). 0.5 miles in 5:00, treadmill.

Mass: 101.6-102kg.

Afterwards, I was starving. I'm still hungry, in fact, despite a giant bowl of soup. But I should do a small bit of work before my Plato class - and before class I can have a snack.

Also, have an interesting link about Cesare Borgia and Machiavelli.
hawkwing_lb: (Bear CM weep for the entire world)
Today I went to the gym before noon, for the sake of having a change - and also because there's a wine reception tonight at which there will be people I want to see. And it turns out I've been calculating my benchpress weights wrong: including the bar, I'm lifting 60kg. Go me?

1 mile in 10:20, treadmill. 5km in 14:00, exercise bike. 3x5 @60kg, benchpress. 3x10 back extensions. 3x6 @18kg, bicep curl. 3x10 @30kg, seated row. Some other mucking around.

Mass: between 101.3 and 101.6kg.

Now I have to take notes for this research paper due in ten days, and attend a Plato class. Among other things that should be done sooner rather than later.
hawkwing_lb: (Helps if they think you're crazy)
Plato Greek, review for Tor.com, Callimachus Greek, cannibalising of old presentation for instant!progress on the thesis, gym.

1.38 miles in 15:00, treadmill. 11km in 30:00, exercise bike. Benchpress 1x8 at 35kg, 3x5 at 40kg (both including bar), bicep curl 2x5 at 24kg, 1x5 at 16kg. Some other mucking about with free weights. Very short cool-down row.

Mass: between 101.2 and 102kg.

Perhaps I am fit enough to contemplate climbing again without much terror. We shall see. (Starting maybe Sunday week, I think. I will have a desk on campus by then.)

Arose 0645hrs, in the rainy dark before dawn.

Wrote some few words of fiction on the train this morning. Finished a short column post. Went to Greek class and made the horrifying discovery that we're going to be looking at Hellenistic poetry. Wrote 500 words on the thesis.

Went to the gym. Gym crowded by undergraduates, curse them. Mile in 10:40, treadmill, intervals. 33km in 35:00, exercise bike resistance 8. Benchpress: 2x6reps @30kg (+bar), 1x5reps @25kg (+bar), 1x5reps @20kg (+bar). Bicep curl: 3x8reps @20kg (10kg/hand). Other free weight stuff. Rowing, 5:00. Cool-down run, 0.6 miles in 7:00, intervals.

Wrote c. 1/3rd review on train home, in the post-twilight rainy dark. I shall attempt to work on it some more in the next hour, before exhaustion crashes me.

Mass according to gym scales: between 102 and 103kg.

Today I socialised with some of my favourite people, who are briefly home from being all emigrated to England-land. I formatted and submitted an interview for the Tor.com column. I searched after Koan inscriptions, mostly fruitlessly, but I have some references to track down. I'll probably need to ILL them, worse luck. I exercised: mile in 10:10, treadmill; 12km in 32:15, exercise bike; benchpress, 2x8 @ 20kg+bar, 1x5 @25kg+bar, 1x5 @27.5kg+bar; bicep curl, 3x8 @18kg (9kg/arm). Some more messing around with free weights. Cooldown run, 0.5 miles in 5:10.
hawkwing_lb: (Default)
I didn't accomplish much. I think I'm okay with that, for now.

I did go to the gym. Mile in 10:40 on the treadmill, intervals. 12km in 32 minutes on the bike, resistance 8. 3x5 by 20kg (plus bar) benchpress. Got one of the staff to spot me for that, because I was a little nervy. 3x6 by 20kg (10kg each arm) bicep curl. Some other stuff messing about with the free weights, seated row.

Tomorrow I need to sort my shit out. Clean desk, clean mind, right? Well, maybe not clean. But let's see if I can get a handle on the clutter...
hawkwing_lb: (Helen Mirren Tempest)
Today I ran four miles (or a little more) in fifty minutes. Fear me, for I am mighty. Or not so much. Sigh. At this rate I might be able to outrun the zombie hordes by the time I'm forty.

I am tired and unable to concentrate and stressing about things I can't control. Mostly money. It's making me a bit screwy - hasn't helped that the parent's been sick, or that I'm trying to scrape together bits of my thesis chapter from... I don't know what. My brain is gone. My motivation is gone. I am afraid.
hawkwing_lb: (Default)
...if not yet mighty.

Rainy day, the roads all but empty of pedestrians, the sea crashing along the shore with a low constant rumble. I ran intervals to the last busstop out of town on the Skerries road and back, four miles or thereabouts in fifty minutes. I am, it must be said, not going to be running any marathons anytime soon. Although it turns out that I can run farther when I sing out loud to myself. Fortunately, due to the aforementioned empty roads, I escaped arrest for crimes against music.

(Seven years on, I still remember the running calls from hockey. Which we only ever used warming up before away matches. One! Two! Three! Four! Kick you out the kitchen door! Ah, such good bloodthirsty times.)
hawkwing_lb: (Liara doing)
Gym: 2 miles in 23.5 minutes, which is an improvement over last week. Still can't run a continuous mile, but got this result by doing faster intervals. Some weights, a short go on the bike, stretching.

Sigh. Need more endurance now.

Also now: need to write more thesis. Which is hard, because, well. Thesis.
hawkwing_lb: (Liara doing)
Gym stuff: increase in stamina noticeable, but it'll be another couple of weeks before I start hitting a continuous mile, I think, and a bit longer before it stops being *gasp* *wheeze* *canIstopnow*. Conclusion: I will be fit again in time to go away to Athens again and lose all my conditioning for the second time this year.

(2.2 miles in 27 minutes treadmill, 10km in 28 minutes, bike.)

Linky stuff:

Alex Dally MacFarlane on the gender imbalance in SF anthologies.

BBC pictures of the transit of Venus.

Other stuff:

I need to bring the LJ booklog up to date. And do other things. I forget quite what. My brain is slightly fried.
hawkwing_lb: (Helps if they think you're crazy)
So, gym. Less pathetic than Friday, but still pathetic: 0.6 miles on the treadmill, absent some other faffing around, 10K in 28 minutes on the bike. Some few weights.

Also, I am now 102kg. My ankles and knees do not thank me. So I suppose I will have to do the Boring Constant Exercise programme until I reach a more appropriate fighting weight. Alas.

Now I sit in the library (I'm actually in college, how shocking) and attempt to read the internet before settling down to work. I still have to review Above, and I just keep getting the intro paragraphs all wrong. (I blame [livejournal.com profile] leahbobet for writing such an interesting, complex book.) I am at the point of saying, "Screw it," and writing nonsense just to get a start on it. Or giving up and weeping frustrated tears of insufficiency.

At some point I need to consolidate my to-do list and Make A Damn Plan. That can wait for the evening, I think. Or possibly tomorrow.
hawkwing_lb: (Default)
So, after several days finishing Mass Effect 3 - which is a great game, right up until the final mission: all the emotional impact falls apart at the final choice (and if I have to play co-op to get a FOR REALS HAPPY ENDING [as spoilers tell me now I'm done], SCREW THAT) - I finally went to the gym.

Dear friends, pathetic isn't in it.

I managed 0.5 miles on the treadmill in 5 minutes before my wind went completely. 15 minutes on the exercise bike, for 3.5 miles. Some weights, heavy ones, but not many sets. I suck.

But hey, two weeks of consistent work, and I should be back to sucking less.
hawkwing_lb: (DA2 isabela facepalm)
Tonight: running (2.5 miles in 29:30, in intervals), climbing, being social with people of whom I am exceedingly fond.

Apparently life goes better when I socialise. Even if being social turns out to be expensive, the difference it makes to my mood is quite extraordinary.

Tomorrow I'm supposed to take a black belt grading for Shotokan. It's been delayed, and I haven't trained in four weeks? I'm not really looking forward to this right now, but hey, the worst that happens is I make a fool of myself in public. Yay.

...Hopefully this will actually crosspost to LJ. One must always hope. Always and forever.

Climbing

Nov. 30th, 2011 07:19 pm
hawkwing_lb: (DA2 isabela facepalm)
Summary: I have lost vasty amounts of strength, stamina, and what passed for technique.

But it's still fun.

Also, I can still knock out 2.5 miles in intervals in about 32 minutes, which isn't too disgraceful.
